Where it came from

The Raptor was developed in the United States by Lockheed Martin, working with Boeing, as a next generation fighter intended to dominate the air. The programme ran through the 1990s, building on earlier prototype work, and the production aircraft first flew in the late 1990s. The F-22 entered service with the United States Air Force in the middle of the 2000s, arriving as a new kind of fighter that treated stealth, sensors, and performance as a single package.

The design ideas that made it stand out

The Raptor was shaped from the outset to be hard to detect. Its angular, faceted surfaces, blended edges, and carefully aligned lines are all part of a low observable design, and its weapons are carried internally so that nothing hangs under the wings to spoil the clean shape or reflect radar. This stealth first thinking drives much of how the aircraft looks.

Two features stand out to enthusiasts. The first is supercruise, the ability to sustain supersonic flight without relying on afterburner, which gives the fighter speed and efficiency at once. It was produced in relatively small numbers, with fewer than two hundred built before production ended, which has helped give it an almost exotic status among military aircraft.

Because of its capabilities, the Raptor has generally been kept for high end roles, and it forms part of the top tier of American air power. Its rarity and its performance have made it a favourite subject for enthusiasts and photographers, and its appearances at public events are always a highlight.

How enthusiasts recognise it today

To identify a Raptor, look at the planform. It has a broad, angular body, twin tail fins that are canted outward, and clean lines with no external weapons or bulky pods under the wings. The intakes and edges have a distinctly faceted, cut from a solid block appearance, and the overall shape looks purposeful and sharp rather than rounded.

The surest sign at a display is the flying itself. When you see a modern fighter holding a high nose up attitude at low speed, pivoting tightly, and seeming to hang in the air, you are almost certainly watching the thrust vectoring of an F-22. Its high angle of attack demonstration is one of the signature acts of contemporary airshow flying.
