Baggage tracking is finally working
A plain-English guide to why airline baggage handling is improving: IATA Resolution 753, RFID and real-time tracking, SITA's Baggage IT Insights, and how data sharing across the journey is cutting mishandled bag rates.
For a long time, baggage handling was the part of air travel that everyone agreed was broken and nobody quite fixed. A bag that missed its connection was effectively invisible until it failed to appear on the carousel, and the process of reuniting it with its owner was slow and manual. That picture has genuinely improved over the last several years, and the improvement is one of the quieter success stories in airline operations. This piece explains what changed and why.

Resolution 753 made tracking mandatory
The single most important trigger was IATA Resolution 753, which requires airlines to track baggage at multiple points across the journey and share that information with the relevant parties. Tracking a bag is not technically hard in 2026. The hard part was the industry agreeing that every airline and every airport would do it, to a common standard, so that a bag handed off between carriers actually stayed visible. Resolution 753 created that common obligation, and the tracking infrastructure followed.
RFID and real-time data
The tracking itself increasingly runs on RFID, replacing the older barcode-only scanning. RFID allows whole loads of bags to be read in bulk as they pass a reader, which means the system knows where a bag is without someone individually scanning it. That real-time location data feeds baggage reconciliation systems that can flag a bag heading the wrong way before it is lost, rather than after. The shift from reactive (find the missing bag) to proactive (stop the bag going missing) is the whole game.
Data sharing across the handoffs
Most mishandled bags go wrong at a transfer, where the bag moves between aircraft, sometimes between airlines, and sometimes between handling companies. The tracking improvement that matters most is the one that happens at those handoffs. When the origin airline, the transfer airport, and the destination carrier all read the same tracking data, a tight connection becomes survivable for the bag as well as the passenger. This is unglamorous integration work, and it is most of why the numbers have improved.
SITA’s Baggage IT Insights
SITA’s recurring Baggage IT Insights research has tracked both the technology adoption and the results. The headline finding, repeated across editions, is that the carriers investing in real-time baggage tracking and data sharing see their mishandled baggage rates fall, while the cost of reuniting passengers with delayed bags also falls. The report is a useful barometer because it is annual and methodologically consistent, so the trend is comparable year to year.
Why it matters beyond the carousel
A mishandled bag is expensive for the airline in compensation, staff time, and reputational damage, so the operational case for better tracking does not need the passenger experience argument, though that is real too. The same tracking data also feeds into the broader digital transformation of the airport, the contactless journey, and the real-time information passengers now expect on their phones.

Baggage is one slice of the operational resilience the industry rebuilt after the pandemic strain of 2022, when handling systems at major hubs simply could not keep up with the restart. The investment in baggage IT sits alongside the wider move toward modern, integrated operations that visitors hear about in the halls at the industry exhibitions.
